Your students may have questions or be seeking reassurance, and discussions around the topic may have raised issues you have never encountered before. In this post we share some suggestions and ideas, with a view to easing anxieties and providing clarity.

Useful resources and content

Misinformation can be confusing and make us anxious. Unfortunately, false claims and fake news can easily be found across the internet and social media. Providing guidance to students on where to find true and factual information is a good first step. We can recommend sharing BBC Newsround content, such as this short video: War in Ukraine: What's happening there? This short blog provides guidance for you on: How to help students talk about the news.
The reasons behind any war can sometimes feel so big and complicated that an individual can feel very small and powerless. At Lyfta we suggest focusing on the importance of supporting the individuals affected.

Activities and themes to discuss

Activities that give students the feeling that they can make a positive contribution can make a difference. Exploring themes like community, love for our neighbours, active citizenship and media literacy skills can comfort and empower students. Global Dimension has covered how to approach these themes and some connections to the curriculum.
While Lyfta doesn't have a storyworld about the current situation in Ukraine, there is content to explore relevant themes. In the Village Square in Awra Amba, Ethiopia, students can meet Etagegn and explore the theme of compassion and caring for others, including refugees. In the Library in Awra Amba, founder Zumra Nuru talks about how he defused the situation when his community was under attack. And in the Kids Cup Series, the Palestinian girls football team give us a lesson in solidarity and togetherness during a turubulent time for their country.
In light of the tragic events that have unfolded in Ukraine, we have also brought forward the release of a powerful story calledJourney to a New Home - the story is about Adhanom, an Eritrean refugee who lives in Sweden.
These stories can provide a catalyst for students to reflect on the situation and how they can support people in Ukraine and others around the world during challenging times.

Being compassionate

During times like these there is the opportunity to reflect on wider global affairs. We must also not forget that those in Yemen, Afghanistan, Palestine and many other places are facing similar challenges. As educators who believe in a peaceful and united world, we encourage compassion towards everyone facing difficulty around the world.
We hope this helps you to nurture your students to be global citizens today, and in the future.
