As 2021 draws to a close, we wanted to use the opportunity to reflect on what we’ve managed to achieve in 2021, the lessons we’ve learned along the way, and say a huge thank you to the wonderful Lyfta community that has supported us throughout.

New year, new storyworlds

Despite the challenges of the pandemic, we released 22 inspiring new storyworlds from 14 different countries in 2021, including Everyone has a story, featuring activist and storyteller Kootyin, and Daily Bread, featuring the owner of a small bakery in Kabul, Afghanistan. Our Kids' Cup storyworld series, depicting the journey's of four young footballers during an international tournament, were launched to coincide with the buzz around Euro 2020, and Mother of the Forest, showing how Nay Elaine works to conserve the Philippine Eagle, was released during COP26. We now have 52 storyworlds on the platform as well as over 160 ready-made lesson and assembly plans for schools and teachers to access. We're looking forward to launching even more new storyworlds next year, covering themes including climate change and the refugee experience.

Training

Over the course of 2021, Leah and Anna, our training team, ran 221 training webinars and trained over 2400 teachers to embed empathy, diversity and sustainable thinking with Lyfta. We've managed to maintain the high quality of our training and are proud to say that over 90% of participants rate our training as either extremely or very valuable. You can book a place on our training in the new year now.

Searching for new voices

In November we reopened Neighbourhood Docs, our annual call for films from around the world. This year we are challenging storytellers to find real-life stories that can be shared with learners on Lyfta, with an emphasis on finding LGBTQIA+ stories, and stories that deal with affordable and clean energy, and artificial intelligence.

Supporting the Lyfta community

Throughout 2021, our engagement team has been busy supporting Lyfta users to get the most from the platform with valuable weekly content and resources around awareness days such as Earth Day.
Our new Lyfta calendar now links subscribers directly to relevant lesson and assembly plans for key dates across the academic year. We have also launched a programme of CPD for subscribers, which includes courses on assessment for learning, and self-regulation and metacognition. In January, we'll also be running our first diversity, equity and inclusion course with expert Angela Browne. We are delighted with the feedback we have had on our resources so far and are glad to be able to support teachers to use Lyfta to engage meaningfully with important topics across the whole year.
We were also lucky enough to meet some of our community in person again, as face-to-face conferences and school visits resumed. Leaders at the MATPN conference and students from Upton Court Grammar School were able to meet Rob Arnold from our Beachcomber storyworld and learn more about his work to raise awareness about plastic pollution.

It's easier than ever to get started with Lyfta

Our new 30 second sign up means that you can now get fast trial access to the Lyfta platform, including two inspiring storyworlds - Beachcomber and The Visitor's Centre from Awra Amba. We also designed Lyfta Time, 20 minute sessions where a class can travel to a new place and experience a powerful human story every week.

Looking forward to 2022

Our desire to inspire and empower teachers and children to grasp their role in building a fairer, more sustainable world is stronger than ever as we enter 2022. Our vision is that by the time a child completes their education, they will have been to every country in the world, having experienced real human stories in each place they visited. They'll have seen numerous life situations, jobs, skills, values, perspectives - all at play in the real world. We've made large strides towards our mission this year, and we are excited to see what 2022 brings.
Wishing our Lyfta community a happy, healthy and enjoyable new year.
