Mohit walks on his land under the thick forest canopy calling out to the hoolock gibbons above, swinging from branch to branch like extraordinary acrobats. One by one, they come down the trees to fetch the bananas Mohit is offering them.
In the film ‘Our Hoolocks’ we are transported into the lush green forests of Assam, and witness the beautiful coexistence of humans and hoolock gibbons. We observe how Mohit and his community members look after the gibbons as if they were family, fighting to conserve their habitats and ensure their continued survival. In our rich media articles we learn how these remarkable primates - the only ape species in India - are strictly arboreal, depending on trees for everything. We discover their character and just how important these shy creatures are for biodiversity. The storyworld also explores the challenges of growing cash crops like tea, bananas and palm oil, and how accreditation schemes such as the Fairtrade label aim to protect the environment and create fairer conditions for workers.
“Our film aims to raise awareness among young viewers about some of the challenges faced by hoolock gibbons and humans. Our ultimate goal is to instil hope, spur action, and motivate viewers to actively participate in conservation efforts for the harmonious coexistence of humans and nature.”
