A story of four parts

Kristos from storyworld Last Child of Arki
This storyworld consists of 4 separate explorable 360° spaces, each with a film looking at a different aspect of Kristos' story. Schools are encouraged to explore the series of 4 films over the course of a few lessons. These slower-paced observational style documentaries invite children to really notice the details, make inferences, and draw their own meanings from what they observe and hear. Often the dialogue is sparse, so more emphasis is given to the sounds and sights of life around our protagonist and the expressions on people's faces. This style of film may be new to many students, but can be used as a powerful tool in the classroom and a wonderful introduction to observational documentaries.

Rural life

Rural life is introduced through sounds such as the tinkering of goat bells and the waves lapping at the shore. Kristos can be seen herding and feeding the goats, fishing and roaming the island. With his family he ploughs the fields with simple machinery and at school he plays alone in the yard shooting hoops. Students will also get a sense of village life as they view the local women chatting as they work together on a church flower display.

Education

Education, and the right to education is an important theme. Kristos' teacher is a central character who passionately believes in her only student and is "very stressed about what will happen" to him. She is seen writing letters and making calls with regard to his future declaring, "The State never really cared about these kids here".
In the final film when we travel with Kristos to the new high school on the neighbouring island of Patmos he meets his new classmates who ask "Does it feel weird to be here with so many children?" He replies, "Yes it feels weird".

Changing times

The theme of change is also explored. Going to high school is a big change for Kristos and the responsibility of the decision is seen to weigh heavily on him. The village women discuss Kristos' future, changing times and the future for Kristos' brothers who they believe will struggle to marry.
