Around 100 students (8-16 year olds) from eco-councils across seven schools in the UK and Sweden are working together to take action to tackle climate change. Each school team has around 15 members and is doing a student-led action project in the lead up to the International Centre for Educational Enhancement (ICEE) Earth Summit - a three-day climate action conference in March 2022 in Sweden.

World leaders will meet in the UK this autumn for COP26, the annual meeting in which nations speak about climate change. Alok Sharma, the UK's COP26 president, said "The role of young people in tackling climate change, one of the greatest challenges of our generation, will be crucial." While the conference runs from 31 October, the students participating in the ICEE Earth Summit will work on action projects to improve the environment.
At Lyfta, our goal is to inspire the next generation of global citizens to engage meaningfully and compassionately in the world. We were delighted to be part of the ICEE virtual Earth Summit kick off meeting on 12 October 2021. The summit included students from Beaumont Primary School, Brannel School, Northgate High School, Passmores Academy, Shevington High School from the UK as well as Lund and Trelleborg from Sweden. We shared inspirational human stories to help develop students' thinking around environmental issues and enhance their action plans.
Students explored our Beachcomber storyworld from Cornwall, UK and met Rob, who collects the plastic waste that washes up on the seashore. They discussed his values, which included being kind to the environment, creativity, integrity, and taking responsibility. They also paid a virtual visit to Argentina where they met Andrea, who separates usable materials from landfill waste. One student said, "No matter your circumstances, you can help to make a difference. Even in very difficult circumstances."
COP26 gives our world leaders the opportunity to make serious commitment to action on the climate emergency. Whether or not these commitments are met, the students taking part in the ICEE Earth Summit, alongside many young people across the planet, are motivated to lead real change for our planet.
